I find this image both beautiful and melancholy. It is from a series of seven etchings of mammals made by Smith from a collection of specimens from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Instead of depicting the animals in life like poses, she has emphasised the specimens as corpses. The vertical format reinforces the feeling of the animals as hanging and dead. Smith says of her work on animals “I was interested in the symbolic morphing of animals and humans. I found this anthropomorphizing of animals Interesting”. In my own practice I attempt to highlight the relationship between humans and animals. I admire the way Smith has produced such a simple image, which can say so much
