Artists’ Books: How to Find Rain

How to find Rain or . . . . . . . ‘Tratamiento de una ofrenda para pedir la lluvia: San Pablito Pahuatlan Pue’ by Alfonso García Tellez.

This is an accordion fold, collage book made from bark paper (amate).

Made in 1978 this book explains how to carry out the ceremony to summon rain to a Mexican village – San Pablito Pahuatlan Pue.  On the pages are cut-out images in dark amate of Otomi gods – gods of crops such as sugarcane, corn, black bean, pineapple, coffee, peanuts and so on. Originally these books were produced to preserve knowledge for future generations. The text is handwritten in Spanish.
