mid century modern

Dominic Bradbury’s ‘Mid-Century Modern Complete’ is a definitive survey of one of the most popular, collectable and dynamic periods of international design. It offers a rich overview of all aspects of the subject, covering furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, textiles, product design, industrial design, graphics and posters, as well as architecture and interior design.

Design: The Groundbreaking Moments. This book is dedicated to the great ideas and turning points in the history of design. The bentwood chair, Bauhaus furniture, Dieter Ram’s designs for Braun, Apple computers, and Ikea furniture have made their way into homes and offices around the world, but all these objects signify major departures from those that came before – a new way of designing things that, in many cases, we now take for granted. In 20 diverse chapters, this book explores such ‘groundbreaking moments’ in product design.

Iconic Designs: 50 Stories About 50 Things. ‘By returning to the etymological roots of iconicity and showcasing objects which are distinctive, memorable, internationally recognised and the subject of significant media attention, this text addresses what we mean by ‘iconic’ and how that aids our understanding of design and of iconicity….’

Making design: Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection by Irma Boom.  Cooper Hewitt possesses one of the most diverse and comprehensive collections of design works in existence, and is the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design. Featuring more than 900 collection objects selected by its curatorial staff and renowned designer Irma Boom, ‘Making Design’ embodies the most important tenets of the institutions philosophy: transparency of design process, accessibility for all users in its physical and digital manifestations, and cross-discipline connections throughout the collection.

China’s Design Revolution by Lorraine Justice. Justice describes and documents examples of Chinese design and innovation that range from ancient ceramics to communist propaganda posters. She then explores award-winning projects in media, fashion, graphic, interior, and product design.
