New books: Graphic Design & Typography

raw dataRaw Data: Now that huge amounts of information can be gathered and processed with ever-greater speed, graphic designers and illustrators are playing a crucial role in explaining what all the collected data really means and how we can make sense of it to improve our personal and professional lives. More than just a survey of finished work, ‘Raw Data’ gets behind the final image to reveal how a stack of numbers can be transformed into a beautiful image rich with meaning and explanation

retro designGreetings from Retro Design: What is a true 1950s look, as opposed to a 1930s or 1940s look? This book addresses that question by thoroughly surveying the development of graphic design over the course of the 20th century. Timelines for each decade highlight key moments, styles and movements, while profiles of 30 influential graphic designers are interspersed throughout.
transforming typeTransforming Type: This title examines kinetic or moving type in a range of fields including film credits, television idents, interactive poetry, and motion graphics. As the screen increasingly imitates the properties of real-life environments, typographic sequences are able to present letters that are active and reactive. These environments invite new discussions about the difference between motion and change, global and local transformation, and the relationship between word and image. In this study, Brownie explores the ways in which letterforms transform on screen, and the consequences of such transformations.

hello i am ericHello I am Erik: “Erik Spiekermann is one of the best-known typographers and graphic designers in the world. He not only represents German typeface and corporate design like no other, but his work and companies he has founded have had an unparalleled influence on contemporary graphic design around the globe. The visual biography, Hello I am Erik, is the first comprehensive exploration of Spiekermann’s more than 30-year career, is body of work, and his mindset.”

These new books are currently on display on the 2nd floor of Llandaff library. Follow the links to the library catalogue for more information or to place a reservation. Available to borrow from 24th June.
