New Books

Two engaging publications from the current new book display . . . .

moroccanMoroccan Interiors by Lisa Lovatt-Smith

This book explores contemporary interiors in the sun-soaked land that stretches from the Sahara to the Mediterranean – Morocco. The diversity is breathtaking: the rural pise architecture of the south is a far cry from the Hispano-Mooresque ornamental beauty of the imperial cities. Moroccan interiors are as endlessly varied, as the country itself, from the restored palaces in the medina of Marrakesh (where aesthetes of the international set now live), to humble troglodyte fishermen’s homes at Sidi Moussa d’Aglou. The colorful palette of this country, and the light there, itself suffuse these very different homes with a vitality that is as distinctive to modern Morocco, as it is a reflection of contemporary trends in decor worldwide.

walking on artWalking on Art: Explorations in Carpet Design by Deirdre Dyson. Walking on Art‘ explores contemporary carpet design from a practitioners viewpoint. A foreword by Professor Sir Christopher Frayling contextualizes Deirdre Dyson’s award-winning work within discussions about art and design, and then Dyson herself reflects on her long experience of designing exquisite luxury carpets.

On display for you to browse – 2nd floor of Llandaff Library – until Wednesday 27th April, after which time they may be borrowed. If you would like to read more about them or place a reservation, follow the link to Metsearch – Cardiff Met’s new library catalogue.

Here she explains both scientific botanical illustration and the looser botanical art, and covers materials, collecting and preserving plant specimens, drawing and painting techniques, magnification, using dividers, drawing from life, composition, light and shade and tranferring drawings. She goes on to discuss painting leaves, flowers, cactii and succulents, wildflowers, trees and plates for Curtis’s Botanical magazine.
